My Little Blessings

Uncategorized

Around the house lately:

Ingrid.  She’s just a sweetheart.

Solveig.  She’s busy these days.  Very.  Busy.
She’s stealth-like trouble.  She sneaks off into the craziest places, like some sort of Houdini.  We try to keep her close, as best as we can.
David, just chillin’.  Ever since he was 18 months or so he’s liked to be upside down in small spaces.  I’m not sure what to make of it.
Silje and Elias (these 2 are really into art lately), and yes, Silje just got a major haircut.
Shorter, layered, thinned…her wave showed back up again.

The lady who cut her hair was aghast that she was homeschooled, and kept trying to take Silje aside to tell her “It’s okay to tell me you hate homeschooling,” as if Silje were being kept against her will, and needed a safe place of escape. Silje thought she was a little crazy.  The lady also didn’t like the fact that I nursed my baby (with a cover) in the salon since I guess civilized women pump ahead of time and then feed a bottle in public, so that people don’t have to “see” you nurse.

It took all that was in me to not tell her that I birthed the baby at home and her placenta is now buried underneath our elm tree.  Put that in your pipe and smoke it.  You think we’re strange now?  Hehe.  You have no idea.

She did a fabulous job on Silje’s hair, though.  As a rule I normally don’t confront people who have scissors in their hands.

I told Silje before we went in not to tell them that we make our own shampoo.  I don’t know why.

 Solveig again

We’re separating the laying chicks and the meat chicks today.  The meat birds are growing so much faster and are starting to bully the smaller layers.

Knut and I had a really fun candlelit dinner at home last night.  He made me a greek flank steak roll, with fresh steamed asparagus and a salad with spinach, raspberries, almonds, feta cheese, and a homemade dressing.  For dessert?  (Knut never forgets dessert.)  Rhubarb crisp with vanilla bean ice cream.  I’ve been complaining about how busy we have been, and our once a week dates that we had before we were married have turned into once a month dates, which have recently turned into 3-4 times a year dates.  I’ve been needing some romance, so he made me a dinner.  It fit the bill.

Then he went to work at 5am this morning.  Planting has continued.

Swimming lessons are done.  Piano lessons are done.  There is a quick breather before the summer activities start to overwhelm, so we are catching up a bit at home by getting the seeds in the garden, finishing up a couple knitting pattern submissions due this week, and leisurely working on some 4H projects before the fair.

It’s going to be a great week.  Thank you, Lord for new mercies every morning.

That’s what our date nights are like, too. Once a month (the 4th Thursday, to be exact – it’s the only one not taken by Cub Scouts) we make a meal after the kids go to bed. It’s nice to be able to talk without the little ones constantly interrupting!

Lovely post! But ugghhhh…what is the hang up with nursing??? And you were even nice(?) enough to cover up…I just whip that big boob out anywhere these days, and he’s 1 1/2.

That was very rude of the hair dresser. You were a lot nicer than I would’ve been! Um, but like you said…I would’ve waited until she was done with the scissors, though. LOL

Oh my goodness, your hairdresser!! I was cracking up reading about her trying to finagle a confession from Silje regarding homeschooling! And nursing!! I always cover when nursing in public – in part for my own comfort and privacy- and have yet to get any comments, but with my first two we lived in the Seattle area and people there are pretty “progressive” when it comes to nursing. We’ll see what happens with number three now that we’ve moved away from the city to the more-conservative Eastern Washington! I nursed my 4 wk old for the first time in public last night and felt pretty old-hat about it this time around.

I think I need to institute a planned date-night in once a month when possible. We used to cook together a lot before the kids came and it might be fun to add that back into our lives once in a while with some special recipes. Thanks for the idea, your husband sounds a lot like mine, although a bit more adventurous in the kitchen on his own! 🙂 Every time you talk about your relationship I feel that “kindred spirit” you mentioned in your comment on my blog. Your marriage sounds kind of like ours in some ways and I just enjoy hearing about it; it normalizes my world a little bit!

Silje’s hair looks great! I’m sure more curls will show up now that it is shorter and more thinned out.
