First, I want to say congratulations to the host of the Yarn Along party, Ginny, who had her little baby boy this last week. I’m not sure if she’ll be posting a Yarn Along, but I thought I’d write up a post just in case.
Well, I couldn’t take seeing all of the Milo vests that all of the other “yarn along” ladies have been making, and decided to make one for each of my girls as part of their Christmas present. I know many of you have just rolled your eyes or dropped your jaw at the mere mention of Christmas, but for those of us who like to make as many of our gifts as possible, summer is when you need to start getting into high gear. Also, I’m really wanting to go through a de-stash of my yarn and take control of my growing pile. This is just some cheapy Joanns stuff that is light and fluffy, so I don’t think they’ll make the warmest vests, but Silje sure loved the color. Not knowing what I was making, I showed her a variety of cables pattern and asked her which one she liked the best. She picked the horseshoe cable, because she loved horses. So there you go. I did Solveig’s vest first, and am now starting Silje’s. Solveig’s was done in size 18 months (ahhh!) because she’s already starting to move into 12 month clothing, and I think by Christmas 18 month clothes would be practical to plan on. It still needs to be blocked, and I need to smooth out a mistake I did near the top. I had knitted one stitch that should have been purled, and went back to fix it. I can still see where I went back, though, and hopefully some pulling and stretching will eventually cover up the loose yarn in that spot.
I’m still on Chesterton. You are all probably getting bored of hearing me yammer on about him. If I continue on with my 5 pages a week or so, this may continue on until Christmas as well! Right now I’m on the chapter “The Ethics of Elfland” which is continuing the awesomeness of this book. It’s a very political chapter, and I think it’s great. Here’s a great quote:
“I know that some moderns are asking to have their wives chosen by scientists, and they may soon be asking, for all I know, to have their noses blown by nurses. I merely say that mankind does recognize these universal human functions, and that democracy classes government among them. In short, the democratic faith is this: that the most terribly important things must be left to ordinary men themselves–the mating of sexes, the rearing of young, the laws of the state. This is democracy; and in this I have always believed.”
Reading this guy is about as intense as reading A.W. Tozer, but he has this “jolly” quality to him as well which makes it so pleasant!

June 1, 2011 at 5:48 amThanks for sharing the great quote. People often feel that the government should take care of them thus shirking responsibility in all areas…
Also, I’m not tired of seeing all the Milo vests. In fact, I’d like to make one too as soon as I can.
Have a great week!
