Homeschool Friday

homeschooling

We had a busy homeschooling week.  Lucky for you, my update will be quick today.  We got behind on English.  We got caught up on Chinese.  That’s the way it goes, I guess.  I couldn’t manage to get history done every day, and it ended up getting grouped in the end, but Silje and I seem to prefer it that way anyway.  I figured she was looking at her Norway book all week too, which could count towards her history/geography course.
At homeschool group on Tuesday, she studied braille.  She studied the history of it, the letters, and even got to type her name in braille using a braille typewriter someone had gotten a hold of.  She really liked that.
There’s another off curriculum project that has been taking a lot of her time.  It was actually all her idea.  It started over our Christmas break/maternity leave when my parents were here.  She wanted to write down a recipe that she claimed to invent called a “ham and cheese sandwich.”  I had a stack of composition notebooks that I had hoarded when all of the school supplies went on clearance in the stores this late fall.  So I told her, maybe she wanted to start writing a cookbook, and fill it with all of the recipes that she thinks up.
Well, she was thrilled with that idea.  Various times throughout each day, she runs to her cookbook, and writes in a new recipe.  She titles it, lists ingredients, and then writes out directions.  She has not gotten bored of this at all, and adds about 3 recipes a day to her book. It’s so precious!
Here are some excerpts for you to interpret.
This one is my favorite.  Notice in the directions to start the malt by “eat middle part of oreo” to get them ready to add to the ice cream.

We may have a chef on our hands!  Or, taking into account the number of recipes in here involving ice cream, a future Dairy Queen employee like her mama was.

Those recipes were a hoot! 🙂

I have been reading through and enjoying your homeschool posts from this past year. Maybe I missed it somewhere, but what grades are your children in? From what I gathered, is it 1st grade and preschool/Kindergarten?

I was also wondering if you are using a set curriculum or if you are using a variety of books for your subjects?

I love seeing what other people do for their homeschool lessons because it gives me such inspiration. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, the Braile study is a wonderful thing for her. Someone donated a Braile Bible to our church. It is, if I remember right at least 17 huge volumes. It was one more way to know how blessed I am.
