Well, it’s been a good week for knitting. I’m moving right along with my Lady Pearl Sweater. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was done by next week. Also, I’ve been using the extra time I’ve had with Silje now that David has been at camp to help her along with knitting.
Last year I worked with both Silje and David with knitting. They mostly worked on washcloths/swatches and then lost interest, or I got too busy to take them any further. Both of them have wanted to know more. So now I started Silje on a hat knit in the round. This is her first actual project, and she’s very excited about that. She’s loving how much easier knitting in the round is. I still haven’t taught her the purl stitch, so I actually started her hat, and did a bit over an inch of ribbing for her, and letting her take it from there. I’m going to make her do the increasing and decreasing later in the pattern by herself. She’s working on my 12″ Addi circs right now, but we’ll have a lesson in switching to double pointed needles later in this project. The purl stitch lesson will likely come in the project after this one.
She really wanted a slouchy hat, and we picked out on Ravelry the Felicity hat, as it looks very much at the beginner level, but still very cute. Actually, I picked out about 3 hats that I felt were beginner level, and let her pick one of them. Let’s keep it simple. She didn’t like the rolled edge though, so in her mother’s footsteps she’s already making modifications by wanting her hat to start with ribbing instead.
We went through some project notes, and decided to cast on 80, and skip the first set of increases once she gets to them. Still, we’re both a little concerned it will be too small. She might still be a little girl, but she has crazy-thick hair and wears adult sized hats. Silje doesn’t mind, though, and said if it ends up being too small she’ll give it to Solveig for Christmas, and make a bigger one for herself.
She went stash diving in my “studio” for this yarn, and since I had 3 skeins of it from when our local yarn shop went out of business, I’m sure she could make a few small projects with that. If this does fit her, she wants to make herself a matching cowl next.
Now that we’re getting somewhere with both Silje and David in knitting, I’ve been thinking about doing a short blog series this summer on teaching kids to knit. Would that be of some interest?
For reading, I’ve been working through You Are Loved with my friend, Sonja. At first I agreed to it because Sonja wanted to read it, and I like Sally Clarkson’s books. I didn’t really have much to say about the subject matter of the book besides it seemed really basic. It’s the basic, fundamental things, though, that make me sob. I should have seen that coming. Did God ever orchestrate bringing this message into my life or what? I’m loving this, and I’m loving spending time with my friend discussing it. It’s doubly wonderful.

June 11, 2014 at 2:26 pmI would be very interested in your series. I’m at the beginning level myself, but I’m sure Bella will ask to pick it up this winter, and I’d like to be prepared for when she does.

June 14, 2014 at 2:40 pmYes, I would love a series on teaching kids to knit. I am forcing my 14 year old to learn to knit this summer. She keeps asking why she needs to knit and saying it is boring. She is not happy about it but she is doing just a few rows a day, probably no more than 5. I have only shown her the knit stitch. Her tension has already improved so I am holding out hope.
