Well, I’ve reached the legendary “8 inch mark” in my “Flakes” sweater pattern. I don’t know what it is, but whenever I reach about 8″ of knitting in a sweater I’m designing, I start freaking out that it’s all wrong, or it maybe wrong, or I’m not certain I like how this or that is going. It usually gets put on the back burner for a month or two while I simmer whatever is going on. The problem is usually blocking. I like my blocked swatch, and I will like the blocked garment, but when it’s just being knit up, I question so many things. Right now I’m questioning my decisions on ease, my decisions on the front drape, and whether or not they will really work with this stitch pattern. So I’ll simmer for awhile.
In the mean time, I’ll knit a hat for Knut. Fortunately, hats don’t make the “8 inch mark” that easily. I had some leftover Brooklyn Tweed from his Christmas mittens that he just loved. I thought I’d make him a matching hat. Although, he was so particular about the mittens, that I’m just designing the hat because in listening to what he wants, I can’t find a single pattern out there like it, and I’m sick of heavily modifying patterns for him. So I’ll just design it for him. Yes, he is lucky. But he makes me coffee every morning, and you treat a man like that right.
I’m slowly going through The Ministry of Motherhood. I really like it. It talks about going beyond teaching your kids to “be good” and have a faith based on works, but really living grace, and teaching them about grace. It’s rather convicting and inspiring.
Linking up with Ginny’s Yarn Along.

July 31, 2013 at 1:07 pmI am looking forward to seeing how your sweater turns out. I was thinking about your mitts last night. Very funny that you just wrote about them. I was thinking how cool they were. Good luck with the hat!

July 31, 2013 at 3:15 pmI love the heather blue color. The pattern looks heavenly! The book sounds wonderful, too. I love all the tools that moms have these days! They are SO needed in this crazy world we are trying to raise kids into.

July 31, 2013 at 6:52 pmSo beautiful, I love that you made your husband mittens that he loves. I made my husband fingerless mitts two Christmases ago and for once he hasn’t lost them and he really wore them all the time last winter which satisfied me to no end. He is a bit picky so I haven’t even branched into much knitting for him but one of these days I will make him describe his preferences for a sweater.
That book sounds right up my alley. I am sort of reading Tedd Tripp’s Shepherding a Child’s Heart which is along the same lines. One of these days I will get serious about it and pick it up to really read it rather than poking through a couple sentences at a time.

July 31, 2013 at 6:59 pmYour sweater looks amazing, I hope it doesn’t simmer too long (although I love the wording of simmering rather than hibernating!).
Good luck with your hat pattern modifications :o)
