Yarn Along

knitting

I’m at the tail end of the first adult sample of my “Lady Pearl” pattern.  I can’t wait to try it on!  I have told myself I can’t buy the yarn I’ve had my eye on for the plain version of this pattern until I get the Rhubarb pattern writing finished.  I’ve been spending some time looking for some more babysitters to add to our call list.  Our current small list of babysitters is quickly growing up and getting busy.  I try to have a list of babysitters, because 90% of the time when we are available for a date night, or some time away it’s with very little notice.  It’s the nature of Knut having a weather-dependent job.

I talked to 2 more girls about helping out here and there.  I don’t use babysitters often.  Honestly for pattern writing, it’s maybe 6 times a year…usually less.  When I’m really having a tough time getting a pattern written, I’ll hire someone for a few hours to watch the kids, and I take off for the library where no one will interrupt me.  I actually got one Saturday afternoon set up this month lined up for finishing up the “Rhubarb Cardigan.”

Then I will reward myself with this.

As for books, I suppose it’s been limited to reading out loud to the kids “Prince Caspian” still.  We read 2 chapters last night because it’s just getting so good we can’t put it down.

Honestly, I want to read more for myself, and have been thinking about this lately.  The problem is that I can’t seem to knit and read at the same time.  I’ve been thinking about getting some audio books from the library for the evenings.  Any recommendations?

Linking up with Ginny’s Yarn Along.

Unbroken, a true story of a bad kid turned Olympic runner, turned WWII bombadier, turned POW in Japan. Amazing story, wonderfully told. I read this in print, but it has got to be amazing in any format.

Rude Awakenings of Jane Austen Addict, a perfect audiobook to relax by, if you love Austen, and I’m pretty sure you do.

I Hate My Neck, so so funny, read by the author (Nora Ephron).

How pretty! Happy writing and finishing… In order to read and knit, I listen to books online which works quite well. 🙂 Happy Wednesday! ~Lisa

They yarn you are going to reward yourself with looks identical to the yarn I just used in one of my new patterns! I actually am wearing it at this moment! I love audiobooks and right now I am listening to Outlander. I love it! Good luck getting your pattern finished up! I can’t wait to see it.

Oh yes! I am loving the audiobooks from the library. I download them to my phone, I needed a special app but it was free.
My standard procedure is to look online at my library site to see what they have, cross reference it on Goodreads to see if it is something I think I’ll like, and look it up on Audible.com to see how long it is. I find that I enjoy the experience more having a firm grip on how long the book will take me to get through. I am currently reading one with six, one-hour-long chapters, so I can plan my chores, knitting according to when I can listen. (I also use ear buds so I can listen when Julian is doing other things.)It is also important to listen to the sample so you know if you’ll like the sound of the reader’s voice. Can you tell I’m excited about audiobooks right now? They just give me such a feeling of accomplishment, like no time has been wasted, when I am folding laundry and “reading” at the same time. OK, so for the recommendations… I love all the Miss Julia books by Ann B Ross. Also, Half Broke Horses and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls are good… esp. if you liked the Orchardist. Also, I’ve found some “children’s” books very satisfying for audio reads, if you can stand the narrator’s “kid” voices. Try Bridge to Terabithia, or Pictures of Hollis Woods. It really just depends on your library’s selection, of course. Keep us posted!

    Your knitting is beautiful!
I am a huge audio book lover too and I second The Glass Castle, it’s a favorite. Right now I am listening to The Storyteller and loving it.

We’re reading through the Narnia books with Paisley for the second time, at her request. Of course I’d love to read something NEW, but I am enjoying how much more she’s getting out of it now than she did a year ago. We are also in the middle of Prince Caspian. Such a fun read – I find myself saying, “Oh, bedtime can wait; let’s read just one more chapter.” 🙂

I only got into audio format for books last year since I found the podcast “CraftLit” by Heather Ordover and I love listening – mostly while I do dishes or cook, it seems, but sometimes I listen while I knit too! She has crafty chat at the beginning of each week and then chat about the current book and then she has excellent readers for a few chapters at a time. (She also releases a version of the same podcast called “Just the books” that skips the craft chat for people who don’t knit/crochet, but I always enjoy her chat). The current book is “North and South” by Gaskill but previously she has done Dracula, Jane Eyre, and MANY others, since she’s been podcasting for 10 years. You can listen to previous books just by downloading them on ITunes as well, which is how I listened to Jane Eyre last summer and fall. She has excellent insights and information to share about the books and authors as well so I felt like I was even more friendly with Jane Eyre even though I had read the book myself at least twice before. SO, all that to say, I highly recommend checking out http://www.craftlit.com! 🙂
