Yarn Along

Book Reviews, knitting

Advent is soon upon us, and I’m in high preparation mode.  I’m so excited about this Christmas I feel most days like I could explode.

I’m reading through “The Greatest Gift” which is Ann Voskamp‘s new book.  We plan to go through that as a family, and put an ornament on a “tree” everyday for our “Jesse Tree” project.  This last week I just got some red card stock for backing the ornaments, and I’m planning on cutting out these ornament print outs that came with the book, and make little loops with which to hang the ornaments using the spool of red and white baker’s twine.

The book seems very deep, which I like, but on the other hand, I’m worried my younger kids won’t latch onto the readings.  In any case, we’ll do the Bible readings each day of Advent, which they can all understand, and then do the reading from the book, which some of us can understand, and then we’ll hang an ornament on the Jesse Tree, which all the kids should enjoy.

Our Jesse Tree this year is just a bunch of apple branches that I saved from pruning months ago, and I plan to put them in a large red vase, and we’ll just hang the ornaments on the bare sticks.  The idea of a Jesse Tree is to tell a story (usually Old Testament) each day of Advent that leads to the purpose of Jesus’ coming.  It answers many of the “why” questions by the time we reach the celebration.

This will be our first Jesse Tree, and I’m very excited about it.

I have lots of knitting going on, but what I chose to show was a little bunny cardigan that still needs sleeves and a hood (with little holes to make room for bunny ears.)  I also have to remember to hunt down some little buttons for this little bunny cardigan…and the 2 others that need to be made before Christmas.

I’m sure I’m not the only one finishing up some Christmas knitting during the Yarn Along today!  I’m linking up with Ginny’s site, which hosts the fun Yarn Along, where various blogs talk about what they are knitting and reading this week.  Enjoy!

Hi there! We’ve done the Jesse tree for the past three of four years. We use Ann’s original Jesse tree ornaments. I really like the new ones too! I’ve been contemplating getting her new Advent book as well. I love the little bunny sweater.

I’m looking forward to reading Ann’s book as well. I’m just hoping I can get the ornaments printed in time (we are currently printerless so it’s a challenge.)

The Jesse Tree sounds like a lovely way to mark this time of the season.

Your little bunny cardigan is gorgeous 🙂

I just blogged this morning about doing the Jesse tree through Ann’s book too! We started today… actually, no, I read the reading with my husband and have yet to get out our little tree or prepare the ornament. My little ones are too young to probably get much from the book but I am reading the Jesus Storybook Bible with them – if you start at Creation, there are exactly 25 stories to the story of Christ’s birth and every single story points to His coming, which I love. But they will enjoy the Scripture readings and the ornaments so we will start building it into our traditions. I was thinking of using apple branches as well but am undecided…
