Lots of Stuff

Uncategorized

I feel like my posts have been fewer and far between.  It’s not for lack of things to say!  The summer-crazy has begun, and I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon.

Knut got home early afternoon yesterday, so he took the kids from me, and Ingrid and I went birthday present shopping for Silje.  It’s her birthday tomorrow, and she’s headed out to camp for the week.  I got home from the store, and then we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows.  It’s been stormy, and that has been keeping Knut home a bit more.  With all the rain, he’s still not caught up on his chores here at home.  We keep him busy.

The chickens are all doing well.  The hens are now roaming the yard throughout the day, and we haven’t even lost 1 yet.  Usually 1 wanders off the first day or two, and doesn’t return.  These girls have been doing well.  The meat birds have been weathering these storms.  There’s shelter in their little structure that gets moved everyday.  Knut has added a pallet in there so they can get off the ground when it gets wet.  They seem to like that.

We finally got the garden in.  Then the rain started right on time.  Knut’s been working a bunch even if he’s not farming.  It seems when he’s home he’s either working on the cabinet doors for the bookshelves, mowing the lawn, or paying bills, or working with the chickens.  Many days it has felt like I’m with the kids alone from 7am to 10pm, and that gets hard.

For the last 2 weeks, I’ve had a young teenager from our church who is out for Summer break come over once a week for just 3 hours.  I leave her with all 5 kids and just retreat up to my bedroom.  I’ve been mostly doing technical writing for my patterns that has been piling up.  Really, it’s just a mental break for me.  It’s been so good, and I hope to continue that on as long as she remains available.  She absolutely loves the kids, and brings fun movies and art ideas with her.  She reads books over and over again and pushes them for an hour on the swings.  That 1 morning a week has been helping all of us.

Knut’s home all day today, and we’ll be celebrating the June birthdays with the extended family tonight, including Silje’s birthday which is technically tomorrow.  There’s still so much to be done today to get her ready for camp.

Sundays are now at the family lake cabin.  Days are full of weeding, and putting clothes out on the line, and Vacation Bible Schools, and birthday parties, and all the chores that can’t be done in the wintertime.

Then there’s the never-ending-clothes struggle.  Ingrid is now moving up another size in clothes, so the big going through all her clothes and replacing them process that seems to happen every few weeks has started.  I can’t seem to find any of Elias’ shorts, and I need to figure out why David only wants to wear his Star Wars shirt every. single. day.
There is much to be caught up everywhere I look, and much of it reminds me of how blessed we are.
We’re so blessed to have work.  We’re so blessed to have clothes to go through.  We’re so blessed with our children.  I think of friends who can’t find work.  People who have trouble meeting basic needs, and dear friends who struggle to have a child.  I wonder why God chose us for all these things.  I pray we won’t ever take any of it for granted.
I have really been enjoying reading Ann Voskamp’s blog, and her post on this very topic has been haunting me in the best of ways.  It’s a must-read this weekend.
I hope you all have a great weekend!
