Yarn Along

Uncategorized

Yarning Along from my mom’s house in sunny, sunny Phoenix.  I dream every year of having this unlimited knitting time with the help of my parents when we are visiting them, but what ends up happening is all the kids get spread out among the adults and they get lots of individual attention.  That’s good too.  There are times here and there, and I continue to work on the “Summer Clarity” cardigan pattern, although the pattern will likely be done this spring so I may rename it “Spring Clairty.”  It has very similar elements to my Clarity Cardigan pattern, but it is not as wintery.  3/4 sleeves, a scoop neck, etc.  It even has a bright color that is so pleasing to knit in the dead of winter.  It’s Quince and Co. chickadee yarn in “rosa rugosa.”

This book is actually Knut’s library read, that he has talked me into reading as well.  So we’re trading off reading it on and off on this vacation: Family Friendly Farming: A Multi-Generational Home-Based Business Testament.  Knut has a large respect for the writings of Joel Salatin, and he and his cousin/business partner seem to be reading through most of his books.  This is where Knut is currently at, and it’s a clash between all of Knut’s reading on farming, and all of my reading on homeschooling.  It’s weird having Knut tell me these amazing revelations that he’s reading on farming, and it’s exactly what I’ve been telling him from my homeschooling books.

So I started reading it, and it’s just great.  I’m loving it mostly because it is so us, or at least what we dream for our family.  Salatin calls himself a “Christian Liberarian Capitalist Environmentalist” which basically means he doesn’t fit into the stereotypical label of any of those labels.  I just love it.  As a culture that so desires to put people into categories and boxes, he’s a think outside the box, live outside the box individual.  He’s the sort of guy I wish I could invite over for supper.

He loves homeschooling, real food from the plants and animals that God has created, treating the land well as God has commanded us, teaching our children about the food they eat, where it comes from, and how to be productive, hard working human beings.

Our farm is not run like Salatin’s but few are.  That is why he is so fascinating, and inspiring.  He’s a big back to basics sort of guy and all of his books are full of such common sense that I’d hate to be in a debate with him.  I would like to hang out at his farm, though.  So Knut is nearly done with it, and insisted that I read it too.  Now I see why.  I’m loving it.

My husband and I recently had this happen with his thoughts on programming and mine on writing. Isn’t it wonderful to come together over different things? What a great window from one mind into another.
