Homeschool Friday

homeschooling

I’m sitting here, feeding Solveig, and doing my usual one handed typing.  Thankfully, Knut decided to stay home and help me today.  Elias was throwing up the first half of the night.  We snuggled in between the throwing up and watched “Beauty and the Beast.”  Fortunately, Solveig slept through that and only woke up about an hour after Elias got to sleep.  Knut took pity and is staying home and doing the majority of the house sanitation while I sit and nurse the baby.

He’s been sick a few times this morning, but he’s acting like himself.  He’s playing and doing his normal things.  So he can’t be doing that bad.

Both Knut and Silje have asked if we’re doing school this morning, to which I answer “I don’t know.”

We’ve been just doing the same ol’ for Silje.
What’s exciting is this little boy has finally shown interest in learning how to write!  My goal for the year for him before we start kindergarten next year is to teach him to write his name.  (That and reading simple 3 letter words, which he can already do.)  I got this wipe-able handwriting lines poster thingy on clearance last year after school started.  He hates to sit and write, but I can get him to write if he gets to stand squirm in between letters.  It’s been great at keeping him focused. He’s a bit annoyed that I’m making him learn the lowercase, instead of all caps.
If you’ll notice, he’s writing with his left hand.  Up until now, we’ve had a hard time figuring out if he is right or left handed.  He normally uses his left hand first, but his right hand is usually neater.  When one hand would get tired, he would just start coloring with the other.  This week, though, he’s refusing to even try with his right hand.  So I’m trying to teach him how to write left handed, which I really don’t know anything about.  I’ll have to do some research.
The main problem is that he wants to write the letters from bottom to top, and does curves backwards too, instead of the correct top to bottom lines.  I’m trying to teach him the right way, and he is being very diligent in his practice and has been very teachable even though I can see that learning the “right way” is very difficult for him.  It’s so much easier to teach him when he’s determined to learn.
He’s attempting to write notes to Silje and the rest of us, and attempts spelling out words as well.  He still doesn’t know how to write all 26 letters, so he may be putting the cart before the horse.  All I know is that I’ve learned that once he’s decided to learn something, just hang on for the ride.
(Remember how he went through an entire year of kindergarten phonics in 6 weeks last fall?  It’s like he woke up one day deciding that he was going to learn to read.  I can’t get him to move onto the 1st grade phonics though.  He said he’s not ready yet.  Well…he’s not in kindergarten yet, so he might be right there.)
As for our youngest student, little Solveig has graduated to the Bumbo, which she loves.  She loves to be able to be up like her brothers and sister.
She’s trying to roll over from back to front, but hasn’t got there yet.  On her stomach, she’s made no attempt to roll over yet.
Can you stand it?  I know I can’t.  She has completely cast her spell on me.

Wow, Solveig is SO talented! Not even three months old, yet!

Those eyes of hers are spellbinding! I can give David some lessons on the fine art of left-handedness. Although, if you think he might be ambidextrous, I would encourage that!
