What do Robert Frost, Agatha Christie, Margaret Atwood, Jonathan Edwards, Hudson Taylor, Blaise Pascal, Claude Monet, William Blake, Stonewall Jackson, Ben Franklin, Daniel Webster, Woodrow Wilson, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Gen. George Patton, Lousia May Alcott, Andrew Carnegie, and Elias Howe (inventor of the sewing machine ๐ ) all have in common?
They were all homeschooled.
Today, is our formal start. I mean, Silje was reading chapter books before entering kindergarten, David has known his colors, shapes and letters for quite some time. I suppose they’ve been taught by us for a few years now. Today, however, formal school at home begins.

August 24, 2010 at 12:16 amI’m always a little skeptical of those lists. I mean, I totally agree with the admission of Agatha Christie and Margaret Atwood and some others, but Ben Franklin seems like a stretch, since I don’t think public schools were around when he was being schooled. It was either private or nothing, I believe. ๐
But good luck on all of your homeschooling

August 24, 2010 at 5:16 pmI totally agree, most of the lists are awful! Many claim George Washington was homeschooled, but there’s nothing concrete to support that claim besides the fact he was the only child in his family who did not get private schooling. I tried to sort through and do at least some research to support each one. For instance, Wilson was homeschooled by his father because he was dyslexic, and the teachers didn’t know how to deal with him. Edison was yanked out of school by his mother because he misbehaved so much and she thought he needed a teacher “who could handle him.” Ha! I suppose each parent has their own reasons!

August 25, 2010 at 5:00 amI’m glad to hear of your success in homeschooling. I have taken the leap and will be homeschooling my daughter this year. She is entering grade 7! The boys will be in public school for the time being. Time will only tell what we decide for their schooling. I never thought I would have the courage to take one of my kids out of school, but I did and I can’t wait to start! We aren’t starting until September 20 because we are finally going away after a very long camping season. I’ll be doing homework on our trip getting things ready for school.
Looking forward to reading your updates.
